We are delighted this week to offer you a range of wines from Portugal, a country that can be too often overlooked, but that we feel offers excellent quality, range and value second to none. Indeed, the appellation system of the Douro was set up two hundred years prior to that of the first French quality control system.

There are records of wine being produced in Portugal prior to Roman times and today remains one of the country’s most notable for using indigenous varieties. Grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Bastardo, Jaen for reds and Arinto, Bical and Rabigato for Whites to name but a few that suit the varying wine producing regions from the Douro to Setubal perfectly. In fact some of the very best wines are produced from “Vinhas Velhas” which translates to “Old Vines”, these vineyards are made up from what is now thought to be more than 100 different varieties of vine with more being discovered all the time.

Please see the list below for our current Portuguese wines, we hope that you find them as exciting as we do!

We are also recommending this excellent Rosé from the prestigious estate of Muga.

Situated in the valleys of the Obarenes mountains in the DO La Rioja Alto region. The estate was first established in 1932 and to this day is still only one of six estates in the world to maintain their own cooperage line, providing all the barrels for the wine aging process.

This salmon pink rosé is fresh and crisp with excellent acidity showing excellent notes of ripe red apples, tropical fruit and cherries. It is dry, full bodied and stands up well to even the strongest of flavours such as chorizo, or it's equally fitting on its own on a warm afternoon.

This wine won a Bronze medal at the International Wine Challenge and the International Wine and Spirits Challenge (2009). It is made from grape varieties Garnacha / Viura / Tempranillo. We currently have this wine for £9.75 per bottle or £44.95 per case - or why not splash out on a magnum for £22.90?

Our Mixed Case Offer

The Summer Six – the perfect mix for summer sipping for £63.99 normally £74.25

It might not be a barbeque summer but there's still every excuse to get stuck into a bottle with friends - here are the wines we are offering as part of a mixed case for when the sun finally does come out...

1 x Quinta da Giesta Rosé 2010 – deep strawberry in colour, this rosé from the mountainous slopes of the Dáo region in central Portugal shows excellent notes of strawberry and raspberry on the nose and gives a full, refreshing and fruity mouth feel.

1 x Guy Charbaut Brut Rosé Champagne NV – from just outside of Epernay this family owned and run champagne house produces a range of excellent champagnes. This rosé is made using 90% Pinot Noir which is left to macerate on the skins for 36 hours giving it this deep salmon pink colour. Then 10% of chardonnay is added to give extra complexity and aging potential.

1 x Carqueixal Albarino 2009 – The maritime climate experienced in the most north westerly part of Spain where this wine is produced, gives a rich texture with lots of peach on the palate, whilst still retaining a fresh zesty character with a little saltiness on the finish.

1 x West End Riesling 2009 – Produced and made in the Hill Tops region, a relatively unknown but up and coming area that is known for producing excellent Riesling. The high altitudes and cooler climates mean fresh and exciting whites. This Riesling shows aromatic and zesty characters on the nose and lemons, limes and guava on the palate. All rounded off with a little minerality that makes a perfect wine for seafood or as an apéritif.

1 x Ritratti Pinot Grigio 2009 – An excellent example of what is fast becoming one of the most popular white wine varieties, this particular pinot grigio is from the Trentino-Alto-Adige region in the North of Italy, which means cooler climates that lend themselves to this grape. Aromas of ripe pears, apricots and flowers on the nose accompanied a well-rounded, smooth and honeyed finish. A Very versatile when pairing with food. Pinot Grigio at its very best.

1 x Le Fume Noir Pinot Noir 2009 – From the Minervois region near the walled city of Carcassonne in the south of France, this wine manages to combine the delicate characters normally associated with Pinot Noir alongside supple and warming characteristics. Try with duck and red wine sauce or goat’s cheese with fig chutney.
